WORKS FOR

Offsite backups requiring checksumming entire filesystems, File synchronization as an alternative to cloud storage like Dropbox, Efficiently synchronizing data over slow/expensive connections using rolling hashes

KEY INSIGHT

It's a powerful, self-hosted tool for efficient file sync and backup, but requires technical setup and lacks enterprise management features.

WORKED

rsync uses rolling hashes to compute diffs between two computers at opposite ends of a slow or expensive connection in order to efficiently bring an out-of-date file up-to-date without transmitting too much data.

WORKED

I also prefer to use my own rsync setup than sign up for Dropbox.

Technologies like Active directory /group policy are far more mature and fine grained then what is currently offered by Apple (including custom rsync solutions).

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: File synchronization and backup, compared to enterprise management solutions.

If your NAS also handles offsite backups and you’re using something like borg or rsync then that too is going to require quite a lot of compute to be able to checksum entire filesystems.
