PayPal is the most widely recognized online payment platform globally with over 400 million active accounts. Features include one-click checkout for e-commerce, invoicing, peer-to-peer payments (Venmo), Pay Later (buy now pay later), business debit card, and seller protection. PayPal Commerce Platform offers customizable checkout, multi-currency support, and fraud protection. Integrates with virtually every e-commerce platform.
E-commerce businesses wanting instant buyer trust (PayPal checkout converts higher than unknown processors), freelancers and service providers needing simple invoicing, international businesses accepting payments in 200+ markets and 100+ currencies
PayPal remains essential for e-commerce because buyer trust converts sales — customers who see the PayPal button are more likely to complete checkout. However, transaction fees are among the highest in the industry and account freezes remain a major complaint. Best used alongside another processor (Stripe for primary, PayPal as an option) rather than as your sole payment method.
Businesses needing lowest possible transaction fees (PayPal is expensive at 3.49% + fixed fee), subscription-heavy SaaS businesses (Stripe or Paddle better), businesses that have had PayPal account freezes (notoriously aggressive fraud holds)

PayPal still rules when it comes to chargebacks, Merchant protection (if you follow their protocols correctly... you're pretty much safe. I was able to successfully win chargebacks against fraudsters by getting hold of someone on the phone.

Programming one of these for a Canadian website for provincial tax to hook into another recurring payment script, that hooked into PayPal was an annoying overhead especially when the company was bootstrapped and had like $0 revenue.

For a long time, PayPal was the fastest way to accept credit cards. You could sign up for an account practically instantly vs finding a merchant bank account, a credit card processor, and a third company to interface with you and your processor via the Internet.

The friction in the PayPal UI of making you log in to PayPal to make the payment is a pretty big trust signal IMO.

we see almost 0% chargebacks on Paypal. Even in the rare instances where a chargeback or dispute happens PayPal has never failed to side with us or otherwise cover it under seller protection.

Billing through PayPal is playing with fire. They can and do freeze accounts and it can take months to get the issue resolved. They also locked our funds FOR SIX MONTHS.

Their new online fee is now higher than Stripe, whereas before it was identical. The 'Why are we making this change?' section never answers the question, of course.
