WORKS FOR

E-commerce businesses and SaaS companies needing a developer-configurable payment stack. Supports PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and 130+ currencies.

KEY INSIGHT

Flat 2.59% + $0.49/transaction with no monthly fee. Negotiate rates if you process over $80K/month. Technically powerful but setup complexity is a real barrier for SMBs.

DOESN'T WORK FOR

Brick-and-mortar retailers — no POS equipment. Non-technical teams — API integration requires developer time. Better for established businesses than first-time payment setups.

We looked at Braintree, and it was just missing things that we were legally required to support

They just do a much better job of abstracting the confusion that is payments.

Their value-add is streamlined APIs and tailored customer service. That value-add is nice but relatively smaller and less scalable to boot. As soon as those sites get big they will negotiate for lower rates they can get from a commodity processor.

Braintree couldn't nail the 'immediate sign up' outside of the US.

I don't understand why you would consider using Braintree in Europe (or anywhere) vs. going to Adyen directly.

Just as say Stripe or Braintree have good basic recurring functionality for subscriptions we too think we'll get those requests with Spreedly.

We were in the middle of migrating from PayPal to Braintree for a marketplace solution.

Braintree provides us with the same functionality and a flat $0.25 payout fee, which is a better alignment of incentives for us.

Similar to how Stripe and Braintree don t improve security against a malicious server (just change the form js and it s game over), but help against accidental problems.

opened account with Braintree (could be Stripe as well), all for free.

Their drop-in is probably one of the most frustrating pieces of technology I've ever integrated into a website. Not because it's poor, necessarily, but because it only feels about 80% complete.

They are both aggregators that aggressively underwrite using algorithms... when any unexpected activity occurs (high ticket or high volume), your funds can be potentially held for a long time.

Braintree allows payments through Paypal (This can increase conversion...). If you are going to be bringing in under $200k revenue, then Braintree will likely be the better option in terms of cost considering their first $50k fee-less revenue.

Yes, it is pretty easy to build a basic system with a gateway such as... Braintree but there are two main problems: 1. It does not scale well 2. Building and maintaining your own system takes away from focusing on your product.

if you try to integrate an abstraction on top let's say Stripe and Braintree, there's quite a lot of differences between the 2 for subscriptions.

Alternatively, Braintree.

Why do so many startups write off going straight to an ISO MSP? Or do they, but Stripe Braintree make better offers?

The comment references 'the scary days before Braintree and Stripe', implying these tools solved the difficult integration problems of earlier gateways.

Both Pin and Braintree go through NAB; they seem to be the only bank that's willing to deal with international payment gateways (not sure why exactly).

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Acting as an international payment gateway.
