WORKS FOR

Teams that want one place for docs, notes, and projects. Strong for knowledge management and SOPs.

KEY INSIGHT

Beloved once adopted but requires real setup investment. The blank canvas is a gift and a curse.

DOESN'T WORK FOR

Teams needing heavy project management out-of-the-box. AI features now require $20/user Business plan.

The only thing I haven t been able to replicate from Notion is my shopping list. It used to be one big database, filtered by unticked . So I could add items, and ticking them would essentially hide them. Rudimentary grouping sorting by clusters (frozen section, fruit veg) was a small help, too.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Previously used for note-taking and specifically for a shopping list database with filtering and grouping.

I love Notion and use it extremely heavily. I ve also built a few integrations with Notion. I think it s a great app that uses AI very well, and they continue improving.

notion mcp works for the chat but not code. now my workflow has docs I comment with others in notion, while the actual work and source of truth is in GitHub.

I think Notion has a learning curve that is a little longer than one expects. I can believe that with some dedicated learning time I could be turned into a believer. But I also distinctly had the impression that it was one of those things where it saved a ton of time for a few narrow-visioned people (the people who championed it), but added meaningful time to everyone else's.

Notion looks to be pretty capable in that regard... Notion really does seem to be a compelling product if it weren't for the jackassery that lead to this thread to begin with.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: building an ADU, needing components like todo lists, inspiration boards, costing spreadsheets, ordering lists, documents

I really dislike Notion. Its public API is full of bizarre arbitrary limitations, like a rich text database field can only contain max 100 “child blocks”, where each change in formatting consumes one child block-but its web UI doesn’t have this issue.

I've tried using spreadsheets (Notion) but it's just too much time consuming and tab switching that I gave up in a few days.

Time after time, I’ve seen people who are perfect with their Notion dashboards, full of passion at the start but with no execution.

I watch my team open ChatGPT, paste a doc, explain the context, get an answer, then switch back to Notion. The agent got smarter but the workflow got worse.

Reddit • unknown • Use case: Using Notion as a separate workspace from AI tools, causing workflow friction

we’ve tried a bunch of tools like Notion... but nothing really fits how an agency actually works day to day

They've tried... Notion. Every time it's the same story - founder sets it up, team uses it for a week, everyone quietly goes back to WhatsApp.

I've tried... Notion pages... None of it sticks. People stop opening

Sold only 3 copies of my Notion template bundle in 12 days.

I switched over to Notion and in 5m I was able to get going.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: getting a list of building supplies, one of which was the doors I wanted to use, to have a page where I could put a link to the product page

started with Notion, but was frustrated with speed and then privacy issues.

It has that Notion feel (blocks, collaborative real-time editing etc.) but some functions still need more debugging. Publishing pages is blocked for some users, you have to contact support and support is not responsive.

In heavy development, as of Q3 2023 there's still for improvement to reach all Notion's possibility, however at the rythm of a release every month, it should be rapidly do the job for a small team.

The Notion is 40 pages. Color coded. There's a competitor matrix. A roadmap with quarters.

Reddit • Developer • Use case: Planning a SaaS product with extensive documentation

Their Notion is 40 pages deep. Roadmaps, competitor breakdowns, pricing ideas, Figma mockups. Everything is structured. Nothing is shipped.

eventually i just stripped back to the basics... sometimes you just need something thats not trying to be a whole operating system lol.

Reddit • unknown • Use case: tried to use as a comprehensive productivity system
