Our approach was to first move our applications to rely only on Load Balancers, Block Object Storage and Compute from the cloud. No RDS, BigQuery etc.

RDS for production is great, but you should avoid the bizarre HN trope of Postgres for everything with RDS. It makes your database unnecessarily larger which expands your bill.
