Small businesses issuing invoices and tracking low-to-moderate transaction volumes. Dominant accounting standard in the UK and Australia. Good for working with external accountants on an industry-standard platform.
The QuickBooks equivalent for UK/ANZ small businesses — pick one and use it. Comparable feature set to QuickBooks with slightly less market power. The decision to hire an accountant vs use Xero DIY is the real fork in the road for small businesses.
High-volume or complex B2B transaction businesses — not designed for that scale. Cash flow forecasting features are limited without additional integrations. Some users end up hiring an accounting firm instead.

Any idea a good starting point for integrating something like Xero?

To save you money they might suggest that you post your expenses to some kind of portal based on xero.

Xero allows you to configure very detailed rules for categorization of expenses, which is a core feature in modern bookkeeping software.

Xero is quite good and very large, and it's absolutely in the modern era. It's growing a very large ecosystem of accountants and consultants that are building on the platform.

Xero is a platform with an extensive API, partner program, app marketplace, etc. I've written software that solves problems by working with the Xero API; I didn't need to write my own bookkeeping software to do it.

I spent a lot of time doing my own bookkeeping under the guise of saving money. I ve used Xero, Gnu, Wave, etc.

Software: Xero. My personal opinion is that QuickBooks is shit, but you use the tool that the craftsman favors.

That is why Xero stop at the easy bit. The average bookkeeper is not expected to work at this level.

We've used xero.com multiple times. Always been happy with both.

I've been trying to use features in Xero, plus a few expensive tools online that integrate with Xero.

Most small business accounting software will take care of more than half of the points above automatically - Xero, Quickbooks etc, just pick one and use it.

I'd rather be on Xero or QB which are industry standard. I could then work with experts who could help solve specific problems on an industry standard platform.

Xero is alright, I wouldn't say it's significantly better or worse than QB except they have less scale and throw their weight around less (for now) than Intuit does.

We do not cover the type of B2B bills that businesses need an accounting software for. So we think, we can co-exist with the likes of ... Xero.
Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Implied as a standard for B2B accounting/billing that their service does not compete with.
I found that Xero and Quickbooks are not suited for our needs; that they are more geared toward small businesses that need to issue invoices to customers and for typically low volume transactions.

I've looked into accounting software for our startup in the past. Xero, Quickbooks, and simply hiring an accounting firm. We ended up hiring an accounting firm for full service.
