Helcim is a payment processor offering transparent interchange-plus pricing with no monthly fees. Features include in-person (card readers), online, and invoice payments, a free online store builder, recurring billing, and an API for custom integrations. Automatically lowers rates as you process more volume. Includes free invoicing, a customer portal, and PCI compliance tools.
Brick-and-mortar retail and service businesses wanting transparent pricing, SMBs tired of flat-rate processors like Square overcharging on large transactions, businesses needing both in-person and online payment acceptance
Helcim is the anti-Stripe/Square for Main Street businesses. Interchange-plus pricing means you pay actual card network costs plus a small markup — significantly cheaper than flat-rate processors for businesses doing $5K+/month. The automatic volume discounts are genuinely unusual. No monthly fees and free invoicing make it very SMB-friendly.
High-risk industries (restricted by Helcim), businesses processing very low volume where flat-rate is simpler, enterprise companies needing complex payment orchestration

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Researching specific Visa interchange rates
The way it works for the networks (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) is that they have several interchange rates ( https: www.helcim.com us pricing visa-interchange-rates ) which vary depending on the risk of the card [transaction].
Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Referencing their published Visa interchange rate data for understanding payment network pricing.
If you want something barebones with the smallest possible transaction fees and a good API, Helcim was quite good... they were the only payment processor I could find where that would still be profitable because of their (then) low fees.
Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Processing a lot of micro-charges for a project, needing low transaction fees to stay profitable.
Helcim takes ages to respond to tickets. They still haven't fully set up my account after weeks. You can't just do sandboxes or dev mode by default; you have to speak to a human via email who sets it up for you.
