If you’ve ever opened Google Analytics or one of those other big analytics dashboards, you know the feeling: too many numbers, too many charts, and worst of all, most of the data isn’t even actionable.

It also calls in things like google analytics.

This seems to be akin to suing Google because a website uses Google Analytics but didn't disclose it in their privacy statement - silly...

tools like Google Analytics tell you where people came from... but there’s no simple way to connect the two [with who paid].

I built 1WebAnalytics as didn t find a quick way to track website visitors across my websites. I tried to setup Looker as an integration point to all Google Analytics but wanted something much simpler.

And the sheer complexity of the documentation and puzzling talk of UA to GA4 migration left me with a sour taste.

AFAIK, most of the major public-facing analytics platforms work by sampling their users. If their users are voluntarily choosing not to engage with the platform that their sampling runs on, they by definition cannot measure that change.

Since most websites use GA then yes most need the banners.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Website analytics and third-party tracking

MIXED

I'll agree I don't like the third-party aspect of GA but users of the most rudimentary product of that sort want to know how many unique visitors that got in various time intervals.

It's awful service in many ways, but because they're free and can afford to be free, they captured 80-90% of web analytics.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Web analytics

It's free and has everything I need to see where traffic comes from and which pages convert. For an SMB it's overkill to pay for anything else.

GA4 is powerful but the migration from Universal Analytics was painful. The interface is not intuitive and takes weeks to understand.
