Paper was awesome at launch — so much less friction than Google Docs for teams back then — and had a good internal product team behind it, but leadership failed to see the potential.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Team productivity and document collaboration as an alternative to Google Docs

FAILED

Lame purchase, which would only increase my cost of Dropbox, which will force me to move to Google One. So, essentially, Dropbox is stupid squared.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: cloud storage and services

WORKED

It has always 'just worked'. I can probably count on one hand the number of times Dropbox has annoyed me in the last 15 years. Maybe it’s overpriced, but at least it’s reliable.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Virtual drive and automatic photo/video backup across Windows, iOS, and macOS devices.

It is (or was) cheaper to signup for 365 than buy the same storage in dropbox.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Cloud storage

I miss Dropbox's Public folder from a decade ago. That was the first and last time sharing documents from web drives made sense.

Let me run downstairs and grab my iPad, chuck the image over to it using Dropbox, then AirDrop you.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Transferring an image from a phone to an iPad as an intermediate step

Can't automatically save pictures to Picture Roll, Google Drive, Dropbox for integration with your other pictures.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Desired integration for automatically backing up and syncing photos from messaging apps

FAILED

Can't automatically save pictures to Picture Roll, Google Drive, Dropbox for integration with your other pictures. I would think this is by design.

Dropbox still charges $120 yr for the entry level plan of just 2TB after all. 3x WD Blue NVMEs + an N150 and you re at break-even in 3 years or less

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Cloud storage for 2TB of data

WORKED

I want to not have to think (a la dropbox, being slick).

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Syncing files seamlessly without having to think about it

WORKED

Dropbox grew 100K → 4M in 15 months via referral loops. Their viral loop came from their product’s native usage.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: File storage and sharing

FAILED

does not retain file backups like Dropbox or Google Drive.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: File backups (implied as a positive comparison)

For a while, I could edit 'paper files' that other team members created... but I couldn’t create new paper files without duplicating a team member’s doc and deleting the content.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Cloud storage and file synchronization, including the migration of Paper documents into the folder structure.

FAILED

Now when I visit paper.Dropbox.com, all of my 'old paper' docs are completely missing and I see an empty list... what’s the point of maintaining two separate services with the same name for five years?

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Creating and collaborating on documents, and managing a list of those documents.
