WORKS FOR

Teams managing structured data like content calendars, inventory, project pipelines, or CRM-lite use cases; non-technical users who need relational data without SQL

KEY INSIGHT

Uniquely powerful for turning spreadsheet workflows into proper databases without coding. Learning curve is real — it rewards users who invest time in setup.

DOESN'T WORK FOR

Teams that need true project management features out of the box; non-spreadsheet thinkers who find database concepts confusing

you don't need to rent generic software that barely fits your complex use case and forces you to duct-tape webhooks together.

Reddit • Founder • Use case: Generic SaaS subscriptions before product-market fit

Very similar in trying to be an easy-to-use database tool with a spreadsheet as its primary user interface.

all the alternatives are fairly mediocre, I tried them all. The closest thing is google spreadsheets, which really is not designed for RDBMS light database work.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: RDBMS-light database work

WORKED

It wasn’t perfect but it did help me to automate what had been a very painful process.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Applicant tracking system base to store applicant rows and manage status via drop-downs

Airtable does have much better documentation (case-studies, intro videos, API docs, forums), better marketing, wider adoption and growing numbers of features, these were some of the reasons I chose it over other options.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Chose it as a long-term software solution after benchmarking.

it looks so listy and like something people would actually use... the real differentiator is the ability to easily put checkboxes and pics in a row.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Creating structured lists with rich media like checkboxes and pictures.

Stronger as a database/spreadsheet replacement. Better for structured data with relationships. Gets expensive fast.

Reddit • Ops Manager • Use case: Use as database/spreadsheet for structured data with relationships

Airtable como Engine: Más flexible que una DB tradicional para validar.

Reddit • Solo Founder • Use case: Validating micro-SaaS ideas quickly without backend expertise

WORKED

I built a fix for it. A clean public changelog with automatic email notifications.

Reddit • Product Manager • Use case: Build a no-code changelog tool to announce product updates

I was thinking of airtable but it feels hard and redundant as in am i tracking all payments there?

Reddit • Ops Manager • Use case: Build system to track payments, invoices, and reminders for SaaS.

I wanted a round robin system in airtable, which requires me to write a script in old school Java.

Reddit • Solo Founder • Use case: Build a round robin assignment system

I took a somewhat long but simple DIY’able approach: Twilio, Google Sheets, Airtable, Python, AXL Customer Intelligence.

Reddit • Ops Manager • Use case: Increase customer retention and reviews for a phone repair shop with zero ad budget.

I built a bot that saved my client 12 hrs/week on manual quoting. Their close rate jumped 40% in 30 days.

Reddit • Developer • Use case: Automating manual quoting process

FAILED

Tried Airtable because everyone recommends it, but honestly too much with all the field types, views, and options. Spent hours just trying to set up a basic client tracker.

Reddit • Solo Founder • Use case: client tracking for consulting

Inventory is soon to be on Airtable with all of our events, customer info and m

It doesn’t always feel like it’s as easy as the marketing materials would have me believe.

Reddit • Solo Founder • Use case: Build a home refurbishment estimator and project management tool

Logs everything into Airtable for review. Lets me approve, reject or request changes.

Reddit • Solo Founder • Use case: Automating social media posting workflow

Airtable sweeps a lot under the rug. Primary keys and foreign keys are heavily abstracted in Airtable, giving rise to some surprising behavior for anyone more accustomed to actual databases.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: modeling and editing relational data

WORKED

You can probably build a simple enough one in Airtable for your internal users to edit easily... Airtable... are OK out of the box, can be made better with some tweaking.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: building a simple CRM system with internal user editing and external user forms

MIXED

I don't know if there's a ton of value in an open core solution over just using Airtable... if the fully closed alternatives are more polished and straightforward.

Hacker News • HackerNews • Use case: Implied alternative to open-core solutions
